Frequently Asked Questions:

General

What is steganography?
Steganography is a technique for hiding information. The word comes from the Greek ‘Stéganô’, meaning “I cover” and ‘Graphô’, meaning ‘I write’. Within the context of digital technology, it refers to a file tagging technique for hiding information in a photo, audio, video or text file. Its use can either be visible or invisible, depending on the algorithms used.

What is evidentiary value? How can photos taken using S&P technology have evidentiary value?
A combination of imprinting (for traceability) and steganography (for authenticity) is used to detect any changes that have been made to an image or to one of its copies. Shoot&Proof provides its clients with tools for displaying and checking the integrity of photos taken. Since we keep the original on our servers, we always have a reference version with which we can compare any copies.

Questions about handsets

My mobile phone is not in the list of compatible handsets.
The Shoot&Proof application works with handsets running Windows Mobile 5 or 6 fitted with a minimal resolution camera. A Java application is available for a number of handsets running operating systems other than Windows Mobile (Symbian, Java), the features of which are compatible with the S&P application. The list of compatible handsets is regularly updated.

Questions about subscription

How do I download the demo?
First of all, you have to create a Shoot&Proof account by clicking on "Try me", "Download and Try" or "Open a S&P account”. You will be able to use this account to manage your photos. Once you have created your account, you will be able to access the download platform. You will then be asked questions about your handset so that you can download the version of Shoot&Proofwhich is compatible with your handset. Then you just have to install the application on your mobile and start taking photos.

Questions about my account

How do I top up my photo credits?
Whenever you like, you can purchase photo packs via our online shop, which you can access from your account. You have a choice of several packs (10, 25 or 50 photos), depending on your requirements. You need to obtain a license before you can top up. Don't wait until the last minute to top up. Once you have purchased a pack, you can activate it from your handset when you need to. Any remaining photos you have left will simply be added to your new pack. The ‘valid until’ date will either be that of your existing photos, or of the newly-activated pack - whichever is further away.

What happens to the photo once it has been sent?
Once you have sent the photo, it is stored on a secure server. You can view your photos from your Shoot&Proof account.

Who has (or can have) access to the photos?
Only the user account has access to his photos with his login and his password. However, it can share his photos (copies) with others if he wishes (date shaving).

How do I activate the georeferencing facility on my handset?
At the moment, the georeferencing facility is only available from a limited number of mobile operators. To activate the service from your account (Account menu/”My account”/”My handsets”), click the "activate" link and check that your mobile operator supports this feature. If it does, we will help you through the steps required to activate the service. Once activation is complete, you will be able to use the service. You'll be able to access the service once you have ticked the "Georeferencing activation" box in the Shoot&Proofmobile application.

How do I display a map showing where my photo was taken?
Clicking on the "Cartography" menu in your account will expand a range of options. In order to display a map, a minimum of one photo needs to have been selected and georeferenced at the time it was taken by - either by GPS or by GSM. You can display all the photos selected on one map, or on separate maps. The latitude and longitude coordinates refer to a specific point on the map. However, for GSM georeferencing, the level of accuracy is transmitted by the operator when the photo is taken. This means that you can display the uncertainty zone associated with the accuracy.

Can I edit my photos?
You may edit your photos with a selection of available tools. Whether or not you have access to these tools depends on the mode you are using (demo, prepaid, premium, subscription). Edited photos are copies of the original which is stored on the server. Only the original photo has evidentiary value.
